= Struggle for implementing the June 15 inter-Korean joint declaration

Dec.1- A seminar on the subject of “Peaceful reunification of the country and prospect of 2006” was held in Los Angeles with the presence of Koreans of all social standings in the US.

- The editor of the US-based Internet homepage “Minjok Tongshin” published an article denouncing anti-north Korea and anti-reunification moves of the new conservative forces of south Korea.

Dec.4- A commemorative meeting marking the 15th founding anniversary of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification was held in Seoul under the sponsorship of the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification.    

Dec.9~10- A meeting of the Preparatory Committee for Joint Functions of Koreans in the South, North and Overseas for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration (June 15 Joint Committee) was held in Shenyang, China with the participation of delegations from the south, the north and overseas sides. They decided to rename the Preparatory Committee for Joint Functions of Koreans in the South, North and Overseas for Implementing the June 15 joint Declaration the National Joint Committee for Implementing the June 15 Joint Declaration (June 15 National Joint Committee) as required by the developing reality. They expressed unanimous views on bringing about a fresh turn in the movement for national independent reunification by the concerted efforts of the nation in 2006, too, under the banner of the June 15 joint declaration.

Dec.12- Religionists of Christianity, Buddhism and Catholics held a news conference in front of the Chogye Temple. They urged the government to repatriate the unconverted long-term prisoners to north Korea.

Dec.13- The Youth and Student Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration released a statement titled “Let us vigorously struggle for national reunification.”         



=Anti-US and anti-war struggle

Nov.29- The People for Peace and Reunification held the 52nd rally for peace and disarmament. They demanded reduction of war expenditure and withdrawal of a motion calling for the extension of the term of the presence of the south Korean troops in Iraq.  

Dec.6- The Reunification Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration and Peace on the Korean Peninsula released a statement to disclose the fact that the US staged a new preemptive nuclear strike exercise.

Dec.7- The People for Peace and Reunification held a rally in Seoul to denounce the authorities’ servility to the United States.      

Dec.8- The Youth and Students Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration released a statement denouncing absurd remarks of US ambassador to south Korea that north Korea is a criminal state.

- The Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration issued a statement to denounce the US ambassador’s drivel against north Korea.

- The Daegu and North Gyeongsang Provincial Reunification Solidarity made public a statement criticizing the US nuclear preemptive attack exercise and hostile policy toward north Korea.

Dec.9- The People for Peace and Reunification held a news conference against the 5th south Korea-US security policy initiative.

- A news conference was held in front of the US embassy in Seoul to make a great success in the December 11 grand peace march for checking the expansion of the US military base in Pyeongtaek and achieving peace on the Korean Peninsula. It was sponsored by the All-People Measure Committee for Checking the Expansion of the US Military Base in Pyeongtaek.

Dec.10- The People for Peace and Reunification released a commentary denouncing unfair pressure of the US to purchase its weapons.

- The south Korean Federation of University Student Councils issued a statement denouncing absurd remarks of the US ambassador to south Korea.    



=Struggle for democracy and the right to live

Dec.1- A press news conference was held in front of the Kookmin Bank in Seoul under the sponsorship of the People’s Solidarity for the Abolition of the National Security Law, 57 years after the fabrication of the law.

Dec.2- Several progressive organizations called a news conference at the hospital of Seoul National University to censure the government’s agricultural policy and ruthless suppression of the police upon the peasants.

Dec.3- The All-People Measure Committee for the Fundamental Recovery of Agriculture and the Denunciation of Murder of Peasant Chun Yong-chol held a candlelight rally to mourn Chun’s death in Seoul for the last eight consecutive days. 

Dec.4- An all-people rally for defending national agriculture and wining legislation on the guarantee of rights to the part-timers took place at a park in Seoul. It was attended by at least 8,000 workers, farmers and youth and students affiliated with various organizations including the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions, the Federation of Peasants Associations, the National People’s Solidarity for National Independence, Democracy and People’s Right to Live and the People’s Action against the Troop Dispatch.

- Members of civic organizations and students including the South Headquarters of the National Alliance for the Country’s Reunification staged surprise demonstration in front of the Chong Wa Dae in demand of punishment of police man who killed peasant Chun Yong-chol and resignation of the government. 

Dec.5- Workers of transportation went on a general strike.

- A press conference demanding the annulment of the ratification of a proposal for rice negotiations at the National Assembly, probe into the truth behind the murder of peasant Chun Yong-chol and punishment of those responsible for the murder took place at a park in Seoul with the attendance of newly elected presidents of the general students councils of 35 universities including Gyeonggi University, Seoul University of Industry, Sungsil University, Yonsei University, Chunnam National University and Hongik University.

Dec.6- The Citizens Federation for Economic Justice released a statement demanding the government and the National Assembly to come out for positive dialogue with peasants.

Dec.7- The Committee for Practicing Freedom of the Writers’ Association of National Literature held a news conference at the hospital attached to Seoul National University. They strongly demanded the government authorities make a thoroughgoing probe into the truth about the murder of peasant Chun Yong-chol.

- Seventeen human rights organizations including the Lawyers for Democratic Society, the Family Movement for Realizing Democracy, the Buddhist Human Rights Committee and the International Democracy and Solidarity for Human rights and Peace issue a statement titled “The desecration of the graveyard of unconverted long-term prisoners can never be justified.”

- The Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration made public a commentary denouncing the conservative forces’ inhumane act of destroying graveyard of the unconverted long-term prisoners. 

Dec.8- Kim No-jin, chairman of the Seoul Area Federation of University Students Councils under the south Korean Federation of University students Councils issued a statement to denounce the scum of the earth including the Grand National Party for destroying the graveyard of unconverted long-term prisoners.

- The Youth and Students Solidarity for Implementing the June 15 South-North Joint Declaration issued a statement titled “Let us dissolve the Grand National Party which masterminded immoral criminal acts.”

- Chairman Moon Gyeong-shik of the National Peasants Associations released a statement titled “The Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry, which drove the peasants to death, apologize to them.” 

   Dec.9- At least 60 elders of civic organizations including the National Alliance for Democracy and Reunification held a news conference censuring the conservative organizations of destroying the gravestones of unconverted long-term prisoners in Paju City, Gyeonggi Province.
